Telecommuter’s Guide to Avoiding a Summer Productivity Slump (Lifestyle)

About 67% of professionals agree that working remotely is productive, but avoiding the summer slump can be difficult. In the last post, we discussed some technology-related tips to help even the most frazzled remote worker get their productivity stride back this summer. However, the solution isn’t all about technology; there are plenty of lifestyle tips that can help get your routine back on track as well. Here’s part two of our telecommuter’s guide to avoiding a summer productivity slump.

Try 90-Minute Work Increments

Not many people are aware of this bit of science, but experts say that humans can only work efficiently for increments of between 90 minutes and two hours. That being said, it’s worth giving it a try — schedule all important meetings, phone calls, and other tasks in 90 minute- to two-hour increments. Give yourself a break between each session, and you should return to work feeling refreshed, revitalized, and ready to take on the rest of the day — or at least the next session.

Reorganize/Rearrange Your Desk

Nothing provides a new outlook on your work life than rearranging your desk area. It doesn’t have to be anything major; you can move your desk so that it’s more open to sunlight, you can open up space on your desk to keep your mind focused — anything is possible when it comes to crafting an aesthetically pleasing environment that’s conducive to productivity.

Stay Active

Most people know that keeping the blood flowing is always a good habit, but sitting down for too long is often one of the biggest causes of the aforementioned summer slump. Stay diligent and active to avoid it — you’d be surprised at the opportunities you have throughout the day to get off your feet for a few minutes.

“Being sedentary for most of your day isn’t great for your waistline. Score a few minutes of exercise during your next meeting by getting up and walking around. You don’t have to run laps around your office, but by moving around, it will give you a chance to be active,” writes Jennifer Parris on Flexjobs.

Working remotely isn’t easy, but these tips should provide some insight. Of course, nothing has a bigger impact on your everyday productivity than your surroundings.
