A Note From Linda

Greetings!

Winter will be upon us shortly, although we’ve already had several opportunities to experience the bitter cold, theblustery wind and the darkness that it brings. To help warm you and lighten your winter days, I thought I would share a special short story with you.

Hortense Calisher, a virtuoso of the form, once called the short story “an apocalypse in a teacup.” It’s a definition that suits the remarkable story I would like to share with you, a story to be devoured, at leisure, on a winter weekend.

The Snowman is a children’s book by English author Raymond Briggs (born 18 January 1934), published in 1978. In 1982, this book was turned into a 26-minute animated movie by Dianne Jackson. The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Animated Short Film in 1982. The book is wordless, as is the film except for the song “Walking in the Air”. The story is told through picture, action and music. The story depicts the birth and development of a beautiful but fragile friendship between a young boy, James, and the Snowman he built in his back garden.

During this winter season, may you experience the total joy, exuberance and wonder of James and the Snowman.
